200tdi in a series what gearbox other than a series fits without the gearstick being to far back. Conversions are not a problem so what is best.

You can mate an LT77 gearbox to the series transferbox using an ashcroft conversion kit, I believe.

That sounds very expensive after buying a LT77 then the conversion kit. Is there not another way. I am sure someone told me there was a gearbox out there that fits with a conversion to the drivshafts and tunnel. I aint bothered what it looks like inside the motor. I just dont think its worth the hastle seeing how long a series box would last... any other ideas ?

people use a series box with a v8 with no probs, providing your not too heavy with the right foot.

And also remember the V8 has the high torque further up in the rev range.  The TDi gives high torque rather low, so you'd be hitting max torque nearly all the time with normal driving unless you're very very very good, and therefore likely to rip the series transmission to bits.

If you did what Redlinemike said, then you would have to change the swivels and other parts in the process.  Series Land Rover swivels are Universal Joints, while all coil sprung Land Rover swivels are Constant Velocity joints, two very differant things.  Series Swivel UJs cannot take permament 4WD without running the risk of eventual failure.

if youve got a 200tdi in it already then you can fit the LT77and transfer box out of a defender onto it though you do need to modify/remove the gearbox crossmember, obtain and modify some propshafts and a couple of other items.
If you PM Stanton Boy he has more or less finished doing this conversion in his Series 3..

Oh yes you also have to move/ modify the engine mountings too, can't remember what else

hope this helps

Neil.....
