I know these were fitted to Sankey trailers, but were they ever fitted to vehicles  :?:

Yes

You'll notice a lot of the Land Rovers have their diff pans painted white to aid convoy driving too.

They are normally mounted underneath, onto the inside of the rear chassis, to shine a low wattage (5w i think), onto as tim says a white painted rear diff pan, or attached to a retangular white plate mounted in a suitable low, well hidden from prying eyes from above

That's one of the reasons ex-mod vehicles have so many positions on the light switch.  In convoy the only light showing would be the convoy light, except for the front & rear vehicles.  If it gets too dim you're too far away, if too close it dissapears under the tailgate.  So my dad told me.  He also said it's not that easy when you're driving a tank and all you can see of the world is through the armoured porthole, but that's a story for another day.

I managed to rip my convoy light off and bend the rear crossmember in the process once - don't ask!

Was going to give my rear diff another coat of white this weekend to add to its authenticity!

My series 3 still has the light fitted, as you say just above the rear axle pan, its on an independant switch on the dash, flick it down and it kills every light on the motor apart from the convoy light. Not managed to damage it yet off road!!

give it time, you will!

it is handy for killing the lights when off roading, in case you get any water in the system
