Title: Torsion bar crank
Post by: HSimmo on March 05, 2007, 23:15:35
Hi,
I'm going to crank the torsion bars on my pickup to get about an inch and a half of lift at the front to level it up.

Firstly, how much is too much? Will I do damage or cause anything to wear faster by taking it up too high?

Secondly, I've heard mixed views on whether an alignment is necessary after a T-bar crank. Does anyone know for certain?

Thanks, Harry

Hi Ive cranked mine up just Ive an inch with +2" pro comp shocks works well with the same +2" shocks at the rear and +2" coils.

I did it to my old Frontera sport with standard suspension and took that up just over 2" as an experiment ,I found uneven tyre wear but great handling on road but of road it lost nearly all its droop, at each small bump I always had one front wheel hanging in the air, so I dropped it down to an inch and it was just right.
Unless you get longer shocks its a bit of a play off really, also you could get an uprated torsion bar, but by that stage you might as well go the whole Calmini lift with Specialist leisure
Ste

My wheel alignment is fine in this car , seemed ok in the other too

It's worth having the alignment checked as this is often free if nothing needs doing.  Who's to say though whether the original setting wil still be right after a lift? it's a good place to start though.

Cranked them 10 turns either side which gave me about an inch of lift. The ride is unchanged as far as i can tell.

Just ordered a pair of Chevy drop shackles which will give the rear about an inch and a half lift. Should help make the tow bar less of a plough this summer! They we're $40 which seemed too good to miss out on. Untill the international order handling fee was added, and there'll be another bill to accompany that one for the shipping. But still, should be under 60 quid. Bargain.
