Intercooler question (again)

(1/3) > >>

Dridze:
Hi,

Just a thought, wil a small electric fan in front of the standard intercooler have some effect :?: on the power.
I got a small fan from a RR aircon and it wil make a nice fit thought i'll give it a try :?

Dave:
I don't have an answer but i think it's a good idea it works on the radiator so why not. go for it and let me know.

drmike:
But the big difference is that the radiator fan will help when the car is moving slowly or stationary - just watch the tempretaure soar if you don't have a fan and you aren't moving.

You only need the intercooler to be cooled when you're moving so maybe a fan is pointless? No-one seems to fit them and they would if it made a difference.

Then again always happy to be wrong!

:) On a standard motor you do have a fan blowing the intercooler it is the same fan that does the water because of the shape of the radiator cowling air will be forced through both radiator and intercooler. But if you remove the cowling and fit a kenlow you will lose the extra air flow at slow speeds so fitting a extra fan either blowing or sucking will help to reduce the temperature of the air entering the engine this will help to increase the power generated by the engine because lower air temp equals bigger bang, that is why with other mods plus a bigger intercooler covering a greater surface area means more bang so if a fan fitted to help slow speed running it should improve things.  Have a look at allards home page and there sales bumf. I have also noticed that because of the position on some cars and 4x4 fans are fitted to help reduce temp two cars that come to mind are a MR2 turbo and a pajero I don’t know if the shogun use them but the pajero runs on a thermostat that cuts in when things get a tad warm.  If they fit them it must make some difference  :D

drmike:
Of course you are right about the location of the fan and cowling which I hadn't really thought through as the fan is not directly behind the intercooler.

I hadn't realised any cars used fans on the intercooler - I'd be interested to know if fitting a fan has anny affect as I have a suitbale one hanging on the garage wall!
