borg warner t-box question
« on: June 14, 2005, 21:14:57 »
when i jacked up one front wheel and tried to turn the front prop it wouldnt budge so i assumed it was seized

now just suppose i jacked the rear end up with the highlift to slide the rear axle out, with the handbreak on but didnt chock the front wheels due to seized t-box (can you guess where this is going yet) its not going to move anywhere is it?

well one bruised hand and elbow, dented driveway, very squashed fuel tank and a rangie that moved about 4 foot i think that the t-box isnt so seized  :?

the handbreak drum didnt move as i coud see it (floor pans been removed)

i know RRB said they were stiff but does it sound like a good vc unit now?

If you jacked up one front wheel and one back then it would move as the diffs bypass the transfer box.

Is that waht you did??

to put it simply the rear axle was completely disconected (prop, a frame, lower links etc)
handbreak was on and working, both front wheels were on the ground
lifted up the back of the motor with highlift and it all went horrible wrong CRASH BANG WALLOP

the question is if the VC was seized the car shouldnt have moved, so have i inadvertantly "fixed" it?

Arrrr, I see now.

If the hand brake drum moved I could understand but as it didnt I cant see how it moved unless its something else.

How did you diagnose the VC was seized???

They can be stiff, its no way as free as a usual diff in a GB.

thats the thing i followed RRB's advice about jacking up a front wheel and seeing if i could turn the front prop, with hindsight maybe i shud have tried to turn it harder before condeming it  :?

too late now though

I think your right.  It is stiffer so be patient.  Think of it as a bowl full of treacle.

Oh and dont eat it.  It does not taste the same....

Maybe I should have told you to try that as a diagnosis of the T-Box.  I've done the same thing myself (though I still had the wheels on) and felt a bit sheepish about it.  The vicous unit will turn slowly, it's resistance increases with the relative speed of each prop.  Remember it has to be stiff enough to send 200bhp down one propshaft in the event of a spinning wheel.

Hope you are ok
