Starting Problems

Ben:
Afternoon All

I've just spent about an hour and a half putting on a new starter motor, only for exactly the same problem to happen with the new one.

Basically, instead of turning the engine, I get a loud clicking noise when I turn the key.

One in 20 times, it will turn the engine...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ben

Daft as it sounds...  is the starter getting enougth power ?

If the battery terminals are loose, or corroded..  or the connections on the starter are.. or if the wires inbetween are, the it is possible that the starter wouldn't engage as one would hope...

Petro is a little notorious for this sort of thing, then again Petro's starter motor is a little unhealthy as well which makes it twice as tempramental.

Ben:
Nothing sounds daft when there's a land rover around!!!

I haven't checked the battery itself - I'll have a quick look.

Thanks

Ben

Ben:
I've just taken off the battery, cleaned the terminals and the clamps, and the 90's fired up first time!

Bit worried about the puff of smoke from the positive cable when the vehicle starts though...

I think I just need to re-fit the clamp to the cable, and probably take the end off the cable first to get a clean join.

So, new starter motor works... I've now got a used 200/300TDi starter motor which is probably absolutely fine! Handy for spares...

Cheers

Ben

Nice one Ben, was going to suggest the same as Daz but all seems to be OK now.

I thought mt starter motor had packed in, but it was eventually a very knackered wire which had corroded through. Also cleaned all the battery terminals at the same time.

Did how ever find out that I have in fact a 300 starter motor fitted, I take it this is fine :?:

Glad it's sorted though.
