Disco 2 loss of oil pressure

As some of you already know the car had a major problem last week whilst travelling up the M1 at 70mph.  The oil warning light came on and there was a noticeable loss of power (not surprising).
I managed to get over to the hard shoulder, but then idled along for 1/2 mile until it was safe to stop.  Turned off the engine, which would not then restart.  Called out the AA who took me home, and then the next morning came out again to take me to the local independent.
Well, found out yesterday that the bolt on the oil pump had come loose which allowed the sprocket that drives the pump to come off.  Result, no oil pressure to the engine and the turbo was in pieces.  Thankfully it seems that the damage to the turbo was all that occured, as there was nothing out of the ordinary on the rest of the engine.  Had another turbo (not in perfect nick but okay to test with) put on and the engine runs fine.
Next week will get a new turbo from Turbo Technics put on and we should be back on the road.
Called LR to inform them of the incident, so will wait to see what they have to say about it . . . . .

Do you mean the "Watchdog" oil pump failure?  If so, then you're lucky you didn't end up with an engine with no moving parts, from what I've heard.

It's not good news for Disco IIs - Mark Casey's viscous fan bearings disintegrating, your oil pump packing in - I'm beginning to wonder if mine will make it back from Iceland under its own power.

Yup it's the 'Watchdog' one.  I think I was lucky 'cos I stopped pretty quickly.  What Watchdog don't tell you is that most of the real bad failures are due to the fairer sex not realising that a red light is on and carrying on home (and before I get hate mail, no disrespect to our lady drivers).

John, mine has done 77k.  If you are worried about it then it's only a couple of hours work for an independent to drop the sump off and check it.

I'm told this applies to 98 and early 99 models only, and that mine's not affected (mine is mid-99).  I was told this by a friend who works in the warranty department for Land Rover, and I hope he's right...  I suppose time will tell  :?
