300Tdi oil seal

(1/1)

Range Rover Blues:
Guess what, I've been working on the TDi this week.  Yet another problem......

The front oil seal appears to be the later metal type with it's own seal journal rather than the traditional hard rubber type we all know and love.

When I fitted a new crank pulley (Bearmach) with the thicker flanges that are cast on, the oil seal tightened up and with the crank pulley bolted on it seized the crank.

Anyone else had this? the later metal type oil seal looks to have damaged the journal on the pulley so I might have to swap that now.

lambert:
Can't say i have as even though mine is one of the last ones it is a rubber type seal.

Range Rover Blues:
I fitted a spare pulley along with a rubber seal and checked it for clearance, it's just got enough space round it with the rubber one so all is hunky-dory.   Can't imagine why someone fitted the metal type seal, it's obvioulsy thicker an doesn't work. what's worse it was probably doen when the belt was last replaced along with the timing belt kit.

At least it's done properly now.
