defender reverse problem

On my defender 90 300tdi when i reverse at low speed something locks up somewhere causing the truck to stop suddenly with a little rock all most like when you apply the hand brake while still moving a little but. Then if you lift the clutch and carrying on moving back wards and it does it again a few seconds later. Nothing wrong with the hand brake had that apart and cant find anything wrong there. Could this a problem with a diff or transfer box or gear box ? 

Any ideas people don't no were to start looking next.

I would of said hand brake (from experience). Have you completely disconnected and tested ?

i have let the tension-er bolt off at the back of the hand brake drum and this does not make any difference. do u think i should remove the hand brake drum and see if this makes any difference ?

Yes. I had a shoe delaminate in a disco did just the above symptoms then locked solid.

hi i removed the hand brake drum and tryed driving same problem. then removed the rear prop and still same prob. so this has ruled out rear diff. need to remove the front prop and see what happens. if this does not solve it whats the next step ?

westy the things you tried didnt rule out the rear axel try it with the rear shafts out as with them in you could still be locking the diff . and from the sounds of it you might have a broken half shaft .
As a youth I could run up and down stairs all day now I'm older it takes me all day just to walk upstairs

Not necessarily. If the fault is with either axle diff it would still present even without power to that diff as it will still be rotating as you drive. Best way to check is to get the axle in the air and rotate by hand without the props on. If they are free then then it is time to do the same thing with the output flanges of the transfer case with the main box in neutral. If that is free leave the props off completely and try selecting reverse with the engine running but be incredibly gentle with the clutch,really  feather it you only want the least bit of drive just enough that you can hear things start to spin up and be ready to remove the power at the first sign of trouble. Having done all that you should be able to say what is goosed be it anything clutch back.


This is just what i would do but i am a rough ass farmer i accept no responsibility if you do the above and break something. If you are not confident then have a trusted vehicle workshop carry out the diagnosis for you.

hi tried all the things you lot said and got no where at all. never found any probs anywhere. so i had to take the chance of replacing one of the main boxes. so i ordered a new gear box from Ashcroft transmissions and fitted it last weekend. also fitted new clutch new release bearing and new heavy duty clutch fork. The old gear box was as we can put it shagged. the input shaft was walloping all over the place.
so now with new gear box the problem is gone and she drives lovely. thanks for your help tho guys.
