Problems problems

brixworth-alan:
Hi All,
I'm having a couple of problems and don't know if anyone has seen/ had similar:
1) Now the engine, rad etc are all back in and connected: she won't start. I have fuel in the float chamber & jet, sparks from the plugs, a new battery and it won't go. I've fiddled with the timing but can't see any issues with it...any ideas?

2) With the gearstick in neutral, the rear shaft still turns when i hit the starter (the propshafts are off): that's not normal surely? I thought the oil might be dragging it round but no- i can't hold the handbrake drum still when the engine turns on the starter- anyone seen these sort of problems before?

cheers

Alan

Saffy:
Do the static timing from scratch. Ensure that its no.1 piston coming up to TDC on its compression stroke. Your timing might be 180 deg out.

brixworth-alan:
Cheers Saffy- i thought i'd sussed the timing but will take another look.

Your landy#s looking very good- what wheels did you go for in the end?

thanks
Alan

Saffy:
S1 is on standard Landrover steel rims, I think they are LWB Series rims. 7.50x16 tyres with inner tubes. Probably the nicest looking combo I have had on the s1 so far.

brixworth-alan:
Thanks saffy.

The timing's getting there now, i get it to fire BUT only if i drip fuel directly down the throat of the carb- it wont fire any other way and of course only runs for a couple of seconds like that.

I've tried choke/ throttle combinations, cleaned all the jets, tried topping up the float chamber directly in case the fule pumps foxxed, all to no avail. According to Mr Haynes in order to find out why it won't run I need to run it at idle for 15 minutes...which is a lot of help!

Can anyone help? It's a solex carb...
