disco 1 3.9 V8 help needed..

(1/2) > >>

lee celtic:
Hi.. I need some help.. I have a 96 3.9 V8 running on petrol not gas. It has been fine for months since buying it but it has developed a fault.

When I accelerate up to 2000 rpm it's like running on kangaroo juice (violent juddering stop start lunging)  then at 2100 it clears and revs out fine. When I take my foot off the gas it drops right down and dies. after a few minutes wait it starts again. it's like this hot or cold.

I did find the pipe from the fuel regulator to idle housing had come off but replacing it made no difference. I'm thinking fuel starvation, maybe a blocked fuel filter slowing the flow and will be getting a new one on Monday but I was hoping you lot may have a few more ideas . I only want to make 1 trip to the shop so any other things I can look at now before shopping would be great.. It started after I put fuel in from a garage with all but one pump closed, I was thinking I might have put crud from their tanks into mine.. thanks..

If it was fuel starvation then it would struggle to maintain high rpm, or would accelerate better on smaller throttle openings.

I would look at the throttle position sensor and/or the air flow meter.

lee celtic:
changed the filter and it was restricted compared with the new one, It made it better but it still chugs through the 1800- 2100 rev range.. I had a quick look at the air flow meter and it looks dirty inside. two questions then.. would this cause the struggle to get through the revs and if so how do I clean it?? (ie. what with)

Thanks for the reply Andy..

Dr Neil:
you shud be o.k to use brake cleaner.

ukmudmaster:
My RRC did this the air flow meter was U/S, try WD40 on the plug/socket first though, a bit of damp in there causes grief,
Dave
