Strange starting problem

A friend is having a very random starting issue with his 300tdi.  If he drives it about 2 miles the stops for a few minutes the starter fails to operate when he ties to restart.  No click no nothing...

After it has been left and the garage turn up or I push it to bump start it the starter will happily work again.

Don't think it is the starter as it has happened on old and new starter

Any bright idea's???

if its had a starter on it,sounds like the switch on the ignition barrell mate
