V8MoneyPit:
I used the S3 headlamp surrounds too. I hated the big plastic jobbies. I've also got NAS lights which fill up the remaining space completely. The S3 surrounds are pretty tight!
I also use the Wipac Quadoptics. You still get the metal backed ones as well as plastic ones. I've never really liked the look of the Wipac crystal ones, so have never used them. The Ring ones can rattle in the bucket. The 3 little lugs on the back tend to be too small.

I like the nas lights I may look into them.

Been playing and it turns out I have quadoptics in anyway so I put some spare 90% bulbs in and whilst better they are still not great so I will get Santa to get Mr the crystal ones, its not like they are expensive if they need replacing.

I can't remember what bran my crystal ones were but they came from Bolton I think, they aren't branded Wipac though but cost enough when I bought them. I fitted 3 pairs, one to Blue, one to the TDi and one to my sister's.
The ones in Blue are cracked and scratched and yellow, the ones in the TDi went a bit yellow but I got sick of the awful beam pattern when I fitted HID.
My sister has Autopal in hers, nice beam pattern, the TDi and the LSE have plastic backed Quadoptics, both cars are standard. Quadoptics work great on cars, they are a popular choice for classic cars.
Blue still has the cracked Crystal ones in, that's the least of it's problems at the moment. If it ever gets fixed it will have Quadoptics too.
The lenses are supposed to be polycarbonate and shatter proof/impact resistant. I don't know how I cracked mine but I did. I think the biggest change is in fitting new bulbs, go for Osram if you can get them, Phillips are ok and so are GE. I don't know who makes the Hlafords ones, my Micra came with Osram and anything I try that's supposed to be an upgrade is not better than standard.
