heater upgrade for s2

Hi all,
   I read that the series 2 heaters are 1) hideously expensive and 2) no good. Has anyone done an upgrade on theirs?

Delk:
I have a series 3 unit in mine (not much better). I recently read an article somewhere on the internet about installing a defender heater and fan assembly in a series. Not fully sure on this one and would like to know more about it.
