drive flange leak

Im posting for a friend here

He has a 51 plate V8 with auto box and never worked on one

Its developed a leak through where the rear prop goes to the box, now owning a landrover my self i would assume that behind where the prop meets there would be a flange with a seal behind. Can anyone ellaborate on whats behind and what parts i may need to cure the problem for him.

It does clonk on take up which would suggest the flange needs replacing inside too as the prop is all ok ( and what a long prop it is lol )

Thanks in advance for your help.....

Check the rear diff for a leak aswell... it could be the start of something else? - viscous/ird wear issues?
I started a few weeks ago with a leak from prop entrance into the transfer box and ignored it for a while!! Ended up the viscous had gone + was slowly taking the ird apart..... eventualy culminated in the viscous barings giving way (clonking noises) then blowing apart on my way to get replacement parts.... Messy!
Good luck! So far mine's costing mega money to put right!!
Fingers crossed its not the same thing!

Nice now to break the news to him.
Do you know what part to change to at least solve the leaking transfer box, is it a flange or an ird unit?

Thanks
