Insurers definitely abuse the fact that it's a legal requirement.

policy small print will say something like ' highways only not byways' BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT that just means you're car is not fully covered on a greenlane but you are still covered to the legal minimum of 3rd party as all polices have the words "nothing within this policy effects the right of a 3rd party to make a claim" that's law and they can't riggle out of it.  So, as long as your happy with taking the cost of any damage whilst greenlaning to own vehicle (and own body) you do not need the greenlane cover as your still legally insured and others can claim against you (including your passengers).

first of all rob i would have asked for a reason why the huge jump  , as with some of these automated insurers the policy starts afresh each year so you acordind to a computer somwhere are new buisness . as i had it a few years ago mine went up by over 700 quid when i asked i was told " oh sorry its been a error in the data input then it came back as 95 quid less than the year before . so always check and ask why as it could be a error like mine or as a freind found out some migrant had given his details at a smash not fun had to prove he was inocent .

True, I have heard a few tales of people enquiring why their insurance had gone up vertically, mentioning that they were therefore going to switch, and as if by magic being given a more reasonable quote!
