Neither, there is very very minimal oil around the engine, and it doesnt smoke much at all, no more than any other landy i have had!

Which is why I say fuel starvation. Just because you used lots of fuel doesn't mean it was the right amount of fuel at the right engine revs. If it is running lean because of a blockage in the fuel delivery system the engine will draw oil in from the sump and burn its own lubricant. if you find another cause, good for you, but I am betting you won't. Seen this several times before on 200 tdis.

Whip an injector out,if its coked up black it could be the engine oil or your engine could just be shagged??
Axetamer:
Before my I rebuilt my 200tdi motor over last christmas I was using about 2 litres of oil every 100 miles with no smoke, I fitted new pistons and rings etc and redone the topend with new valves and stem seals, with the injection pump still set as before the rebuild I now use no oil at all, so this fuel starvation idea seems a bit odd to me I can't see how it can scavenge oil if the valves and rings are ok, fuel starvation normally causes very poor performance, a bit like turning your pump diaphram back too far I'd have a compression and leakdown test done, how many miles has the motor done?

Its done about 90,000 miles.
If it helps it was seriously high revving on the motorway, but not that i could tell how much cos no rev counter in the 110!!!! But it wasnt heating up, it was going in the black bit of the temp guage just before the red, and before anyone says thats high, its still running the 2.5 petrol temp sender etc......... i havent gotten round to the conversion yet lol
