standard description of a failing then failed CV joint...
--- Quote --- it wil only drive when the d/l lever is over to the left
--- End quote ---
was it driving ok without the diff lock engaged before the bang?
--- Quote ---when i turned in to my drive the left wheel locked up breifley
--- End quote ---
Another typical occurrence when a CV joint has gone.
Presumably it was driving ok without diff lock being engaged before the bang, having to engage diff lock to maintain drive would seem to highlight that diff lock wasn't stuck on before the event.
The descriptions are typical of a CV joint failure.
If you can change a wheel bearing then a CV joint is only a little further into the axle to change.

I can vouch for the ease of fitting a cv joint as i can do one, and i am a mechanical idiot :)
