gearbox noisy

Hi all,  driving on the M1 yesterday we suddenly had a load noise coming from the transmission then a 'pinging' sound. I pulled over and could smell gearbox oil!! Only a small amount had driped from the transmission brake?? Anyway got recovered by RAC now need to find out problem anyone with any ideas please??

If it's coming out of the brake then perhaps the back end/output from the gearbox has failed.  Pinging noise I don't know but something could have started to catch as it was spinning.

Start by taing the rear prop and drum brake off to have a look inside for signs of damage (remember the handbrake won't work when you do this).
