The background* of St George is irrelevant.

He is the patron saint of England and, as such, we should celebrate our national day with pride - in exactly the same way as every other country in the world. We currently live in the nation of CBA, with the vast majority of people who don't know who St George is, when St George's Day is, they call the flag an England flag and not the Saint George's Cross or the Cross of Saint George, the call the Union Flag a Union Jack and they don't even know which is the top or the bottom - so 50% end up upside down.

So, instead of deriding your own national day, celebrate it, whether you be English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Greek, Mexican, etc! Once again, a belated Happy St George's Day to you all.

*He was, in fact, a Roman soldier and priest.

Ditto. But, just like Christmas and many other religious celebrations, people have adapted it to meet their own needs.
