200tdi gearbox problem
« on: April 20, 2010, 16:24:35 »
hi guys. been using the misses 93 200tdi while i been working on mine fitting new bearings and stub axle.

anyway this morning as i was heading off to go get my parts i got a couple of roads away then i was unable to get the motor into 2nd and 4th gears. so i pulled over and switched it off had a wiggle about and tried again.

yep still only had 1st / 3rd / and 5th gear to drive. so i thought i would pul over again and try reverse. now the car will only go into reverse or neutral. had to drive all the way home backwards (give you a neck ache lol )

now hers is off the road until i can find out whas wrong.

anyone got any idears before i look at replacing a gearbox,

good news is mines back on the road now after a lot of messing around

I am breaking a truck here with a gearbox that got same symptoms. For what its worth I was told that it was a bent selector  Haven't got to the gearbox yet so dunno.

remove the gear nobs and take the cover off so you can see the top of the box.
undo the 4 pins holding the selector housing on and pull it out.
then you should see a ball and socket where a grub screw locates and locks onto the selector shaft, if you lost 2nd and 4th which is a pulling action not pushing ( 1st, 3rd,5th ) then its quite possable that this has come undone.

i've got a similar sympton to this however you just have to ease it in to gear, I do also think i put the plunger on upside down last time it was off, but didn't think it would make much difference.
