why didn't i listen to myself.
« on: March 06, 2010, 16:08:11 »
Doing the head gasket, went to local motor factors. Got home the one they supplied me with had 2 holes mine... 3. Rang them up said blagh blagh balgh to which he responded yea thats fine acording to our computers.
Just got it back together went to start it it sounds low on compression on the key and turning by hand :(. Battery on charge atm as i used the lead lamp last night.

Is it the thickness of the gaskets that are different dependant on the identifying holes?
Whys it always your own car that goes wrong.

as to your question the gaskets are different thicknesses to take care of piston protrusion ie: how far the piston sits above the head at tdc

Like lurch said, the number of holes indicates the thickness of the gasket. How thick the gasket needs to be is determined by how far the pistons stick up proud of the block. 2-holes is thinner than 3-holes so the compression should be slightly (infinitesimally?) greater than it was previously BUT you might just get contact between the pistons and the head at high revs or when the engine is hot.

HTH :-)
