and how would i know when the other fans would click in ?

would there be anything a would need t change ?

if any one in the know could give me some ideas would be very welcome

Hi Arnie,

Those electric fans are part of the air conditioning system and only come on when the aircon is in use. I'm sure that they could be rewired as normal cooling fans but it might be a bit of a job.

I've had three Tdi Discoveries and removed the viscous fans on all of them with no ill effect - the motor runs so cool normally. I even drove to the South of France and back one summer without the fan and the temp gauge never went above 1/2 way despite cruising at 75-80mph in 35 degree temperatures :-)

Actually!!

The two electric fans are already wired to a switch that turns them on when the temp rises!

I've removed my viscous fan as well as the entire aircon system but left the fans in place. On the odd occasion my temp rises (usually when I have a heavy trailer on the back on lots of hills!) the aircon fans kick in automatically and the temp drops again! Its a really handy backup.

Crazymac, I'm aware of that but they don't come on until the temperature is around 100 C and they are timed to run for 10 minutes only. In my view, that's too little - too late to be certain not to blow the head gasket.

YMMV :-)
