96 Maverick Noisy hub
« on: February 14, 2010, 13:47:56 »
My 96 mavvy seems to have a problem when i put it in 4WD. im getting a rattling noise from the hubs when i engage 4WD that goes off when i put it back in 2WD

Any ideas what this is..  it still has the original auto hubs fitted, and to be honest i dont think they work.

Auto hubs to have a tendency to stop working/seize up etc etc over time if they are not used. Chances are the internals just need re-greasing, or possibly some of the parts may need replacing (which may explain the rattling). Quickly whip them off and have a look at them, it only takes a minute or two. Sorry if thats a bit vague, I don't have a picture to hand however there is a guide on the Nissan 4x4 OC (but it does require you to join)

i wouldn't personally coat with copper grease just normal grease would be fine.
also dont over pack them as the parts need to move.
have you tried taking the hub off, putting a bit of engine oil in it,re fit it and drive around for a bit to see if ths will free them up.
then do the strip down and clean after this.

I have quite a problem, I cant get the hub off as 3 of the allen bolts that hold it on are completely rounded. Anyone know how i can get these off.. I really dont want to have to take it to a garage.

I have even tried using a larger allen key but that didnt help any.

Any help appreciated..

wd 40 and a hammer.
a good sharp tap is all it needs to break the bolt but if you try just pure force they tend to bend the allen key or round off the bolt head.
could try a bit of heat on them but your problem is getting the allen key to grip the bolt now.
mole grips on bolt head and a smack with hammer maybe.once they crack they are normally quite easy to run out with your fingers.
