Whats the difference between a v8 short block and a v8 long block i want to build a rover v8 engine from scratch do i get a long block or short block cheers

its not actualy"block"its what they call,short engine or long engine,the short engine is basically block,with crank rods and pistons,long engine is the same as that,but with heads on as well,some long engines have the timing gear on,some dont,depends on where you get it from,and there is also what they call a turn key engine,which has all the ancillaries on,such as starter,alternator,pas pump and so on,but if you want to do it all from scratch ya self,be weary what you pay for all the bits,as sometimes it can be cheaper,sometimes not,rpi engineering will be a good bet.

ok cheers m8 also reckon it would be better to buy an old rangey or disco and strip the engine out of that then and clean it up

If you go to the trouble and expense of rebuilding an old engine then you need to know the history of that engine, it takes 3 overheats to cause a cracked block as a rule of thumb.  A good solid old engine can provide a good source for a block to recondition as the casting will be stress relieved after all the heat cycles it has had.

Rockers need binning as they hold onto metal particles that casue wear then redistibute them around the engine.  If the heads want rebuilding then fit the later valve guides and seals.

Often a V8 crank will go again without a grind, the camshaft will probably want swapping, it isn't worth putting new lifters on an old cam.  Fit a 3.9EFi cam into either the 3.9 or 3.9 as it's the best standard crank (unless you want a hot cam).  RPI no longer supply s***part lifters.

The cam driven oil pump is only just enough so don't neglect it.  If you can get a surpentine engine to rebuild then all the better.

also dont underestimate the sheer cost of rebuilding one ive literally just done one  it cost me alot more than i thought it would, £300 just to acid dip and rebore my block
