Starter motor

V8MoneyPit:
Hi all

I used the old starter motor in my 90 because it was working fine on the donor vehicle. But it has stood for 2 years while it was being built.

It is now giving trouble. It spins over but doesn't engage in the ring gear to turn the engine. It seems the solenoid isn't moving the dog far enough to meet the ring gear (pre-engaged type). The engine, flywheel, ring gear and starter are all the same as were in the donor vehicle. It takes several attempts to get it to engage and it's rapidly getting worse. Very embarrasing in the petrol station

I've just looked up the price of a replacement ERR5009 (ss to NAD500210)....... £250 + VAT for an LR one or £130 + VAT for a Bosch one (OE)    I could buy a cheaper one from Paddocks or similar, but I don't want to find it's a Britpart item. I don't want to be replacing it again in 3 months time

I'm used to Mini starters at £50!

I deal with QH so I might go with one of their reconditioned ones at £83.38+VAT.

And there was me thinking the spending was over  :'(

have you tried stripping an cleaning the dog gear helicoil so it moves free? I had awful trouble awhile ago and it was a mix between gummed up dog and crap electrical connection on solenoid. Also an extra earth strap to the starter mount point doesn't do any harm. But I did end up getting a decent low mileage bosch one from landrover breaker in forest of dean - no need to buy new and definately DO NOT BUY  a cheap one - have one here and it's proper CRAP engineering and materials - not even close to water resistant either - cheap as you like.

V8MoneyPit:
OK. I'll try to get the truck into work tomorrow and get the starter out. I still have my other car so if I don't manage to get it sorted I can get home at least! Well, now the snows gone I can!

It was thoroughly cleaned externally before it was put on. I'll try taking it apart and check it better.

I do only have one earth strap on it. I did wonder about this when I was building it.

The spending is never over when you run a Land Rover ask my Mrs!!!  A rolling restoration project is what I call it.
