Ok I know this is something silly so any help would be great. I have change the distributor on my 3.5 V8 1978 Range rover. I did NOT change the dizzy cap. I have fitted new dizzy the same angle as old unit an when I got it to fire I got one almighty backfire and just does small backfires since. What am I doing wrong?  Worked on cars for years an this V8 is driving me mad

Thanks Brett

ben-dent:
how did you set the timing,

i would set it up by the book, and then start it and turn the dizzy and time it by ear, doing it like this is the best way to set them up, i have always had problems with them doing by the book

bogie:
Did you put it in 180 degrees out,if so swap your leads round or easier turn it around!

bogie:
Or thinking about it is the dizzy just duff??????????? If its points are the little wires inside insulated or the clear plastic insulators either side of the points,if its elecy is the moderal ok?

lurch_917:
