THe Clarkson thing was simple, someone set up a Direct Debit. If you have ever looked at the form when you set up a direct debit then there is absolutley no verification at all. The bank was entirley liable for that transaction, however lots of people work on the basis that if it was, say £40, most people wouldnt notice for months.

Also anything like facbook, myspace,  and privacy is a total liabillilty. They call it social engineering whereby you get people to disclose things bit by bit. Soeone years ago told me that was all nonsense (he was dicsussing speeding claims on forums etc) Two hours later I emailed him his home address and phone number. I diddnt "hack" anythign, just surfed around all the founms he was on and a few club websites.

years ago myself and friends used to have a go at 'troll busting' on usenet for the fun of it (it developed research skills). The ultimate aim was to profile the troll until you came up with at least a real name, address and telephone number. Then name and shame time by publishing all the details gathered (some of it could be extremely sensitive) for all to see along with the breadcrumb trail of how they were tracked down. Could be many hours worth of data mining and profiling spread over several months. These days with social networking sites I imagine it is hardly any challenge.

I can't even find this alleged "allow indexing" box

It was easy enough to find (my missus has just started on it) but Facebook makes it clear that if you continue to allow indexing, all the google search will show is the stuff that you allow according to your profile, I.E. If you have your privacy settings to friends only then the google search will only show the fact you HAVE a facebook account!

My misses has allowed it to continue, so I went to my laptop and googled her, because she has her privacy settings so high it wouldn't even show that she had an account!
