Auto box running HOT !!!
« on: September 28, 2009, 09:38:54 »
Ow do

Mrs wizard has a 1989 3.5 Auto rangie.
It runs greatbut yesterday while towing the caravan back from Abingdon the auto box got rather warm, and she said it wouldn,t kick down on the hills.
I checked the atf level which was fine before we left.
Is there a filter on the auto box I should check and is there anything else I need to have a look at.
I have the Haynes manual for a Disco so i will have a look through that later to see what it tells me about auto boxes because all our other LR's are manuals and I aint ever worked on a auto before.
Any suggestions are always welcome.

Regards
wizard

There is a filter in the autobox sump. Did the warning light illuminate?,has the atf changed colour to a brownish instead of ruby red and does it smell like its burnt. If yes to any of the questions change the oil .Filter change involves removing the sump. Has it got an autobox oil cooler?.

Agree with above. (filter kit from Paddocks http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/RANGE_ROVER_1986-1994/Gearbox_and_Handbrake/Automatic_Transmission_Service_Kit.html )  also the gearbox x member needs to come off.

There should be a cooler in front of the radiator, it looks like a big hairy sausage

HI
Had a quick poke about.
Transmission oil seems fine, not burnt or smelly. Mrs wizard said no warning lights came on.
I ordered the filter kit so once it arrives i'll put it in and give the Rangie a good thrashing.
