Diesel into a vitara 1992 How an what?
« on: August 31, 2009, 17:35:28 »
Ok I have  1992 short wheel base 1.6 8valve vitara. It runs well but would like to save a bit on fuel an have a bit more torque. I have heard of people fitting 1.9 pug engines, does someone do a conversion plate or is there any better motor that a conversion is available for?

Thanks for your help

hi brett

yes your correct on one count you can fit a pug derv or the mazda version used after

unless you are handy with the spanners id consider 2 options

buy a lwb td or a swb commercial td wud be a lot easier imho

if you want to do the job urself you can get the pug bell housing from suzuki direct you wud have to fab up new engine mounts
change a lot of the wiring and swap  out the fuel tank and fit bigger fuel lines

whe i last looked for a friend the bell housing from suzuki it was £180+ vat
then there is the cost of the rest of the conversion loom and such cud see the price of the home conversion being over 1k

this is a m8s conversion and a good read

hope this helps

As above, its a massive job that will consume all your spare time for months, its often cheaper and quicker to do more hours at work and just buy one ready done, its a lot easier to convert it to gas for a fuel saving
Remember it will come in handy even if you never use it

A friend of mine has a pug 1.9 TD intercooled motor in his SJ ( i know its not a vit....) , had his gearbox converted by one of the 'specialists' to bolt on but it  died within a week, he now runs an LDV van (sherpa) gearbox, bolt on solution apparently but has low gearing in 1st and 2nd. This means making up the prop from gearbox to transfer case and mounts for box and engine, and if you dont have a body lift you need to manufacture a new transmission tunnel as my friend has done and he's also lifted his bonnet by 2" to clear the intercooler - cut and shut, bonnets now 4" deep lol.
