Rough smoky 2.25 diesel lump

I have a very rough sounding 2.25diesel  in my series 3, have just had the head off and the bores are a little egg shaped(ok a lot), as money is short i can stretch to a few hundred for a replacement engine but in the mean time i am considering putting oversize rings in! just to get her back into running order, it has not had a rebore so could anyone advise me on how big i should risk the new rings? or anyone have a cheap diesel to go in her? Thanks Roy

Where abouts are you?
i have a 2.25 diesel engine sat on a palet on my drive, which i took out when i shoved a Tdi in.
it was running fine when it was removed, and should be fine.

i've been trying to get rid of it for years :D

Hi Ian i'm in greenhithe but would need to take engine to canterbury,
what sort of condition is it in would it pass emmission tests?

NiteMare:
pre 1976 (or is it 1979) emmision test is just a visual inspection ... no meter reading required  ...

sorry if yours is later than that

aah cool, greenhithe isnt that far away :)

it was running fine when i took it out. the only reason i changed it was because i aquired a very cheap tdi engine, too cheap to refuse.
it passed its emissions tests with no problems, and as my series is a 1980, it had proper tests, not a visual one.

it does leak oil a bit, and isnt exactly clean looking.
its definately not seized, you can turn it over by hand.
i think one of the downpipe to manifold studs sheared off as i was taking it  out.

if you're interested i'll strap it down to the pallet its on and see if i can run it up. so you can see it running
