If the uj's are ok, I'd pull the rear shafts out, it makes it much easier to check bearings for noise, or jack it up and get someone to drive it through the gears , while you listen for noise, diff backlash sounds about right .

wud we have to lift all 4 wheels off the ground to test the back axle?

You only need to lift the rear , just make sure it's NOT in diff lock, also make sure it's safe, I use r/sleepers as blocks.
