I have a 2.25 5 bearing diesel and had exactly the same problem fine on tickover slow build up of revs fine but give it a quick blast and the world behind you disapeared in a thick haze of white smoke.

Tried pump timing, confirmed injectors were ok, turned out to be the valve stem seals 2 of which had disintegrated and the others were well on their way.

Now when running on fresh diesel is sweet as. if however I run it on the diesel in the tank which I would imagine is at least a year old it occasionally coughs and puts out a small cloud of white smoke. ( water in Diesel I presume)
