Vit help required with steering lock ...Urgent ....ish
« on: June 21, 2009, 13:52:22 »
Hi Guys

This is out of my knowledge base so I thought I would come to the experts. ;)

A friend  has a 2ltr vit and just lately she has been having problems with the steering lock staying on.

All she has to do is remove the key from the ignition and the lock comes on , however when she puts the key back in the lock is staying on and it's a hell of a job and a lot of messing to get it to release....

has anyone had this problem and how did you fix it......or........is it possible to remove the locking bit of the ignition but leave the electrical/starter bit intact (remove the locking pin etc)..

She's been told £200 + to fix by a local garage but shes a pensioner and can't afford to fix it so any ideas would be good . I'm good with a spanner so doing it isn't a problem once I know what to do.

cheers Lee...

hi lee

only just seen this sorry

im sure there is a way to remove the locking pin but like most cars the barrel will have snap bolts fitted might be a pain
to get them out after to fit some standard nuts and bolts
or you cud just do the scum way and lock it and get 2 strong people and snap the locking pin

Hi gen x  :D thanks for the reply , guess I'm just used to the disco boys queing to answer a question...

I have an idea how to do the pin bit ,,, but it's the air bag thats worrying me  :( I'm scared that if I start messing around with the wheel the thing will blow....

If anyone knows how to de-activate it please let me know as I'm going in :pale: ...tommorow

I was just going to pull off the locking mech and grind the end off the pin but I don't want to blow my head off doing it ...

Cheers Lee.. [-o<

hi lee

the air bag system stays primed for over an hr after the removal of battery leads
in thoery thou if you are removing the the key barrel you wont need to take the steering wheel off it might take a bit of juggling to ge the cowling off
but it can be done
as ive had 2 v6's see my come on boys thread lol

Do you want to buy another ??? slightly dodgy key

Glenys at work is 62 and drives the thing every day , at the moment she has to leave the the key in....

I'm having a go tomorrow but after a google I'm worried . as a guy was killed by the bag going off while is head was on the wheel .  snapping his neck. [-o< [-o<

so I will be doing it at arms length  apparently the force is the same as a shot gun shell

Had a prob like this on a few cars, does your friend move the wheel or turned to one side just before taking the key out?As this puts the wheel tension against the lock. This happens a few times and it just involes shake/moving the wheel back while turning key to unlock.
Now got some camacs and bfg a/ts can't get it stuck.Need longer legs.
