200tdi discovery engine in to defender 200tdi advise
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:14:40 »
i brought my defender as a non runner the bloke who i brought it off said he went through some water and came out the other side and it wouldent start i dont think water got in to the intake as it had a snorkle which was well fitted it turns over and there is deisel up to the injecters but wont start the bloke i brought it of asked one of the recovery team to see if he know what was rong and he recond it was piston rings but i thought it will start although piston rings had gone so if any one could help or have any idea what is rong that would be great

but now i have brought a 1993 200tdi disco with a recon engine 10000 miles ago very good engine
what is involved in fitting this in to my defender what do i need to change and need to keep of the other engine

cheers dale

The turbo is mounted in a different position so in order to avoid modding the exhaust use the manifolds from the defender engine.  Other than that its a strait swap I believe.

Did the engine seize?  Possibly a bent con rod but my neighbor had this problem and still started.  would say check the stop solenoid but as you say you've got fuel.  If there's fuel there can only really be 3 problem and that's lack of compression or no air or no exhaust. have a look in the rocker cover make sure its not the 2 latter.

spent all day convrting my defender 200tdi into a disco one,
i managed to chop the ends off the oil cooler pipes from the defender engine and fit the disco ends so the thread lined up, played with the power steering and had to swap one pipe to get to fit, turned the turbo inot the defender manifolds then put a longer tensioner on the alternator so it lifts up a littl emore so you can get the turbo pipe out the bottom, at the moment the piping looks like spagetti junction but i will sort that after going to wales this weekend,
not sure why but i now have alot less studs in the bell housing than before,

hope any of that helped

cheers kieran

just check the pump timing vrs TDC on no 1 cylinder
i.e just check the things timed properly
if its getting diesel, and it doesnt sound erratic when cranking over ( asin up and down the revs like its down on a cylinder) then it should start, or atleast give a cough and splutter

hi i have been to see my local land rover salvage yard and asked him what is involved in putting my disco engine in to my defender and it is a lot more than you think you have to use all the defender auxilliries and change the timing cover to make it fit so a lot of work

If you feel the problem is with the block only, you can swap the defender parts on to the disco block by this I mean the front cover etc, if the turbo is done then go for the complete swap.

Have a look here
