I have used liquid shoe polish to stain wood before now. I had a small pile of bits of trim to go on some shelves, and didn't fancy the mess of trying to stain them properly so in an experimental mood put on some gloves and applied dark brown polish to them. Worked a treat, they came out a mid brown shade that looks good with the rest of the shelving.
