When buying computers I always make sure they come with all the discs. It does computers the power of good to format the Hard disc after a few years. You then realise that your old PC wasn't as slow as you though, its just all the rubbish they accumulate that drags them down. Vista is the same but instead of taking a couple of years of unwanted detritus to appear, you get a whole lot to start with.

Another vote for XP.

I now a few people that are running Vista quite happily. To have XP instead would have cost them more when they bough their PC's  but you need plenty of excess computer performance to run well.

I'd go with XP too.

Windows 7, Vista's replacement, is on the way soon.

I would agree with XP, download the updates to get sp3 and job done, Stable operating system. If you have got a license product code, see if you can download a version of XP and burn the files onto DVD disc and then install, but enter your product code.

I'd vote XP as well (having just rebuilt my Vista machine back to XP) but don't forget that XP is now officially out of MS support.  They will only be issuing security patches from now on, so what you have is what you gets, no more.

Bring on Windows 7, which is supposed to be quite good.

Love xp pro, hate vista ultimate.

Windows 7 ultimate is the best; by the time it comes out, end of the year i guess. it will be as good as xp but more slick.

Try it youll like it.

I run Windows 2000 Pro in the car (laptop had a licence key sticker on it, so it's legit). Great OS, boots from cold in a reasonable length of time. A lot quicker than the XP which the last user had installed on the machine, and it handles Memory Map perfectly.

I will never understand the "must buy new software" mindset. If the old kit still does what you need, then why change? I've got a laptop here that runs Windows 3.11, it still works even though support for that ended years ago.

Depending on your PC it may be possible to obtain a rescue disk of some sort. I know I rebuilt my Dad's old HP laptop that way, as the XP code (a proper sticker on the underside) didn't want to work with an XP disk. I eventually managed to dig up a HP rescue CD, which sorted it out without asking for the code.
