When applying the pressure with the socket, try to get someone to tap the end of the socket, might just be enough shock to release it, it goes without saying not too hard!

Cheers for the advice guys, no hot air guns but I've plenty of hair dryers lying around here  :lol:

Might give it another go tomorrow if it warms up a bit, bloomin cold today.

A cheapo gas torch from a diy shop can be quite effective either Andy.
