RobMonkey:
I have a 1994 Land Rover Discovery.  A mechanic has told me that if I use the diff lock it can wind-up and eventally fail.  Has anyone heard of this problem or had this problem??  Cheers all.

lcruiser100s:
I hope he is talking about using diff lock on hard surfaces. Basic law of physics something has to give. recommended only using it on dirt sand mud etc.

KingWolf:
well that all depends on when and where your planning on using diff lock?

Diff lock is a traction aid for off road driving (normally), providing you don't drive about on tarmac with it engaged you shouldn't have any problems. Sure, sometimes while off roading you can come out of diff lock but the light will remain on due to transmission wind up. A simple short burst forwards or backwards is usually enough to unwind the transmission and disengage the lock and set everything right again.

Hope that has answered your question but I'm sure someone will be along to give you a far more technical answer to your question...lol

RobMonkey:
Thanks very much, big help, only just started off-roading so was just a bit unsure, didn't want to break it so soon, Cheers

KingWolf:
That's ok mate - I was the same when I first started off roading. I had no idea what the "extra" gear lever did in my Disco, let alone how too use it....lol

Just make sure you don't stick it in diff lock and drive around town, cos then something will go bang....lol

Mark.
