alternator not working

After flooding the inside of my disco at sibbertoft on Sunday I no longer have a working alternator, the batt light and rev counter both packed up after the flood.
The RAC man says that if I get the batt light working then the alternator should work again, is this right??

Also the Haynes says that the pre93 model has a fuse in the feed from the alternator where would this be as I think this could have blown since the water was up and over my seats inside the car.

JPJ:
Take the connections off the back of the alternator and give them a good clean up with some emery cloth. Whilst you're there put a multimeter on continuity between the end of each cable and earth and see if you get a reading, that should tell you if a fuse has blown. Other than that it's probably a new alternator. Mine was on its way out and eventually conked out. Sounds rough when you listen to it and no rev counter or battery light.

If the water was very muddy, then the brushes may be stuck (try soaking the back of the alternator with WD40 or similar).
The regulator may have failed, so it might be worth getting it repaired, rather than buying a new alternator.
Do the test as JPJ says, then see what you find.

Take the regulator off and then clean it out.
The regulator is the black(or silver) box held on the back of the alternator by 3 small screws.

I have had this happen several times after going through (muddy)water and it has always turned out to be the regulator sticking.
