Yes, AFAIK the casing match and the gears etc are all nominally the same, but the gears are better on later boxes.  Another option would be to buy a cheap T-box that's bust and rob the bits you need from that, then you keep your quiet, cross drilled gears.

Ah-ha! Thanks for the info and suggestion - I never knew the later boxes were quiter :)
