lambert:
but for paying for it i now own one. needs a few bits like a rocker cover gasket, exhaust and brakes.

so as a newbie to the green oval what should i know?

crazymac:
Maintain it! Regular ongoing maintenance, keep it greased and the oils fresh.

give the metal bits a good check over and fix any rust early, then it will give you years of good service

carracarra13:
I must admit Im learning this after several trucks take care of the old girls and usualy they will take care of you, ther is no such thing as a cheep truck to maintain they are comparable to most motors to run

Disco Matt:
If it has the standard towbar, junk it and fit a detachable one. It will save your nerves from a lot of distressing thumps off road!

You may also want to get rid of the front skirt below the bumper and trim the bumper end caps, also might want to consider a steering guard.

Apart from that I'd say to get some decent tyres and then drive it for a while.

I have heard that the headlight wiring on the 200TDI can be a bit flaky as LR use the stalk to switch the full current to the lights, rather than using relays as they did on the 300TDI. It's not that hard to fit relays and should give better lighting.

carracarra13:
cross members rot like ours back door saggy too and boddy mount persitions rot badly so clean up well and WAX OIL it up including inside the chassie this is a arss of a job but well worth it,  it should keep well this is the next plan for ours as soon as recovered from crimbo, oh yes the frount skurt um ours fell off some where on the farm lol ps and the frount fogs
