Steering Play

My Rangie is up for its MOT in May and it is probably time I thought about goign through my 'to fix' list.

Top of the list is sorting out the free play in the steering, it isnt horrendous but is significant.  Can I tighten the box or do I need a new one?

Next on the list is inner wings, but that is a conversation for another day!

you can tighten ya box up mate,but if it is worn,sometimes you tighten it up and feels good,but then it goes tight on a lock,try it first then you'll know if you need to fit a box before mot,and front inner wings,keep an eye on ebay they are on there most of the time :D

Range Rover Blues:
Some play is necessary because it's a steering box.  IIRC you are allowed 4 degrees of play :-k

Thanks guys, it has a few more degrees than 4 in it at the moment I think!  Will have a go at tightening it and if that fails I will just swap the box.  I assume that in theory it is a reasonably easy job.

Inner wings are a different matter and may prompt me to learn to weld as I am a bit skint at the moment. :(

Range Rover Blues:
Welding best DIY, I find most garages plate ove the rust so it comes back double quick.  Cut well back into sound metal and don't try fitting small patches, do decent sized ones.

Buy a hobby MIG from somewhere like Machine Mart (I've had my Clarke welder for 17 years) and make sure you can get spares as you will trash tips, shrouds, insulators and possibly the torch itself over time.
