to do clutch, remove engine or drop gearbox

(1/1)

intercooled GnT:
hi.
my dads 2.8td trooper needs a new clutch, i know it easyer on a defender to remove the engine to change a clutch.
is it easyer to remove engine to drop the gearbox for the old trooper?

cheers

Drift:
Drop the box, far easier

666:
All depends on the tools you have!
If you have nice jacks to drop the gearbox down then remove the gearbox! But remember you will need to remove both prop shafts, exhaust and the damn gearbox cross member!

If your used to changing clutches by taking the engines out then go with that!

I tend to drop the gearbox with the aid of a steel tube from my dash board to the rear seats and a hand winch suspended from it to lower the gearbox! It is easy for me to remove the gearbox though as i dont need to jack the truck up to get under it!

If the trooper is standard i would go with the engine out  ;) ;)

dxmedia:
heh, and I pull the engine ;)

Bench pressing the gearbox back it a pita IMO, and I can pull the engine and put it back in in about the same time that 666 can pull the box.

I've heard that the 2.8 can be a but of a pig to pull from a trooper though due to the position of the front axle, on the frontera it's a straight pull once the rad is out.
