buying a cherokee
bunnykins:
grand cherokee :
if you are not doing mega miles, buy the 4ltr as these engines should be bullitproof [ simple straight 6 ]
the v8 is even better if you are after sound and performance. i was told not to buy the diesels versions
for the year cars you mentioned as they tend to have problems. not for extreme offroad. good for comfort
ride and motorway cruising.
later diesel cars are better with the merc engines.
cherokee :
would still go for the 4ltr for all reasons above. more suitable for extreme offroad.
hope this helps.

not sure I agree with some of the comments, but I do agree with a 4 litre would be my choice :D
The Smiths has a '95 Deisel one (runs on Veggie) with 160,000 miles on it and believe you me he would go anywhere in it and do anything, it is used for both pay and play and laning, we do trips to South Wales, North Yorks, Cumbria etc.. he has never had a problem, it really is horses for courses and just a case of looking after what you get, if you service a VM right you should be ok, same as anything really :-k
The later engines are ok until you need to buy an injector then it will bankrupt you for sure
Green Jeep:
Yanks not known for small diesels so they used an Italian engine, VM, the M stands for Marine, it's a boat engine with four seperate heads, and surprise surprise it suffers from head probs.
4.0 with LPG is the way to go, hope this helps, Maf
Bishops Finger:
4l with no LPG IMHO...

For sure they drive nicer on petrol, LPG saves a little money, it's also good to point out to tree huggers that a Jeep has zero emissions and can be run on second parts, far more green than their brand new euro box that has damaged the planet just by being made.
Also heard that a few of these tiny city cars have crap emissions and have clever ECU's that know when they are being tested and shut down power to reduce the readings when really they are worse than most 4x4's.... bless
