oil
« on: December 02, 2008, 19:02:07 »
Hi, At the moment I am using 15w/40 in my 1989 range rover classic, I have now read that I should be using 20w/50. When the engine is started there is a tapping and the oil light stays on for 1-2 miles if I use the right oil will this stop and will there be any damage if I carry on using the 15w/40? cheers.  Ben

I only used to use Castrol 20/50 Multigrade in a v8, never had any oil problems.

There isn't a lot of difference between the 2 TBH and if it makes the diference then your engine is probably on it's way out.  It's not unheard of for the V8 to flicker the oil light at idle but 2 minutes :-.

So, try a thicker oil, try a better brand of filter, try fropping the sump and checking the pickup strainer, try cleaning out the oil pump and check the gears in it for wear/damage.  If all else fails my mate sells a 15/60 racing oil :-k
