martyn:
my son is a foreman coded welder working at the mo in Corus ill ask him where is the best cheapest etc stick or mig i cant weld as good as him so its a mig for me.
just a thought if you did go mig you can always change the wire for ally if you needed to, they say ally welding is v difficult but  i think its because not many peps use it with correct settings its no more difficult than steel and some migs can go tig as well but i wont bore you further.
Might it be worth trying to leave the welding so it can all be done in one go then hire a welder for say a weekend

I'm showing my ignorance here but what is a JD2.

boss:
a JD2 (JD squared) is a tube bender, it is probibly one of the better ones for the price.

you aint cool unless you got one of dem :afro:

http://www.jd2.com/shop/

figuring itll be better if i get it rolling before i start with a cage

YRM arnt trading again untill the 15th so ill be putting an order of some tabs in then. would do it now but i want to avoid confusion and chasing people up if the order gets lost or forgotten(like last time with another orange comapny )

if you could have a word with your son for me that would be greatly appreciated :afro:

martyn:
judging by the state of a lot of the so called cages i see around my area the peps making them are definitely not using the JD2 most have rather big flats on the outside bends. and a 4' disc cutter to make the cut outs. looks cool their life in their hands oh and plenty of blobby welds covered up with the same colour paint as the vehicle. scrutineering doh don't think so.

I didn't recognise the make bender as i use the one in my bro in-law fab shop its old but good and a bit of an animal.

Seeing my son tonight update tomorrow

martyn:
Spoke to son he tell me stick welders either work or not no in between so before you buy a new one check these out.
The plug connections / the wire itself not burnt or damaged with items fallen on it / earth connection where it goes into clamp /good earth  on body clean etc .

And last but most important where do you keep the welding rods in the garage? is it damp rods do not like getting damp and need to dry out so if you have some that are dryer than others it will effect the performance   the lecky charge will normally dry these out but if someone is not v/ experienced it will effect . So bring some home with you and put on top of radiator at home for a couple of hours before you use them.
On pucker jobs some types of rods are kept in an welders oven to  stop moisture ingress to alleviate this prob.
If no joy let me know.
Don't forget the likes of Machine mart etc sell hobby welders so don't expect the welder to work for hour after hour as they over heat

boss:
its all mig welded, not arc. All the reels of spare wire are kept in a wood cabenet with a bag of sillicone crystals in it. Im after a new MIG, looking at a newer sealy, really dont want to as the current sealy i have doesnt have the balls to do anything thicker than 3mm without alot of prep. Might dig into the savings and get the lincoln or a migatronic. Sorry if ive caused any confusion there.
