Yes you do!

I swapped my Series 1 reg to my Disco. The DVLA had to check the S1 first. Age meant that the number was long gone/welded over. They threatened me with a Q plate (never tax exempt) unless I could prove it's identity. I spent a frantic month proving that it was correct, axle numbers, engine, gbox, etc.

In most circumstances it won't matter - just be careful if you ever need it!

Chris Putt:
In theory yes...... In practice how difficult would it be to grind it off, and restamp with the original?- Yes I know that wouldnt strictly be legal! maybe weld a 'repair' over it?
