hi ill stat from the beginning , i went off roading last week and went down a track that made the jimny bottom out , after doing 80miles around the lanes and then driving home upto 60mph all was ok , then i discovered my valve was knacked on the rims i had , so i gave the tyre to my mate who put me a new valve on , he didnt balance the wheel after he did it.
then tuesday last week i went to the cinima in the jeep and i got an almighty wheel wobble when i go over bumps and potholes in the road and its that fierce i have to stop the car for it to stop .
now after this i checked the radius arms and found that id bent the drivers side , now ive replaced that today and just been for a drive and the damm thing is still doing it, ive checked for play in the front wheels and there is very little play at all , do you think it because the wheel wasnt ballanced when my mate did the valve???
if i cant find out what it is im going to scrap the jimny :x

I had was getting a terrible wobble with mine at one point and balancing the wheels pretty much sorted it. Also I was told one of the rims was slightly buckled which wasn't helping.

Have you got a steering damper fitted?

Mine moved or came loose once, took me ages to work out where the wobble was from

you might of bent the axel (if you have hit something hard enough to bend the radius arm ) as you said it starts when you hit a bump it could be the caster is out of wack have you lifted it or got any play in the steering links /panhard rod
after a serious bump like that you should have the steering checked for alignment afterwards

just jacked it up again , both wheels off this time and ive got slight play when i rock it left to right , but everything rocks all steering arm ect , ive just noticed the front panard rod is bent aswell , (happy days) dont know what the play is tho

took it to the garage round us and he had a drive in it and nearly crashed with the wobbling it was like driving a clowns car with oval wheels it was that bad , but only when i go over a biggish pot hole at 35 to 40 mph , he checked everything like wheel alignment and camber , play in anything ect and he found nothing of the obvious , the only thing is ive got a very slight bend in my panhard rod but hardly anything .
if my king pin bearing is knackered what are the symptoms , there is no oil res on the innerhubs or any sort of play just what you would expect , im really stumped on this and ill have to resort in an expensive garage bill if the worst comes to worse.
ill try to do the work myself but if i get stuck the garage is always the last resort

you wont find any oil in the c/v housing (unless the inner oil seal has gone) these only have grease in them that why most jap balls can go rusty and not afect it on a mot (not like landy which have to be smooth to keep the wiper seal working and keep the oil in)and if you have bent the panhard rod aswell i bet the steering link is bent aswell

I forgot to say that if youve bent the panhard rod I wouldnt be driving it around, i bent my standard one once as theyre made of butter, and once theyre bent they just fold up the next time you touch anything with a wheel, like a kerb! the power steering can force so much pressure on it if you turn the wheel when tyre is touching a kerb it'll fold in two. for a cheap fix you could take it to an engineering shop, get them to straighten it out, and weld a length of angle iron along it.

tryed taking it off so i could straghten it out but the bolts will not come out they just spin around , now i cant tighten the passenger side up it just spins , its not my week is it :(anyone got a spare panhard for the front , thanks 07833986333

Hi Jamesey,

He has a breakers yard fro Jimnys and changes loads of pannard rods when fitting their kits. He should have a few kicking around if he didn't send em all for scrap when it was Â£240 a ton. While you are on ask him for a price for a full 3" lift kit.

already rung him , he hasnt got any , ive got one for Â£10 from cam suzuki on ebay , it should be here next week so fingers crossed its that whats making it wobble , ive just bought some cranked radius arms for a 3"lift kit , next ill be ringing darran at kap for the rest

fitted a new panhard and its still bloody wobbing , its not a shudder at the wheel its a really bad dangerous wobble and it will not go off till i stop the car , the only other thing i noticed when i set off today it was like my other car the terrano , the free wheeling hubs were clicking

More than likely to be King pin bearings and/or worn swivel rubber seals (these apparently aid damping)

wheres the best place to get the kits from for a resonable price ,
what do you think the clicking is , ive taken the freewheeling hubs off and they look ok , is there a way to grease these up at all ??

Are you sure that the wheel on the side you smacked hasn't been knocked out of round or have you got a gob of rust behind one bit of the wheel between it and the hub that is keeping the wheel from running true.

I fitted spacers and didn't clean up the left side hub quite as well as the right and it caused a wobble. Cleaned it up and re-fitted it and the wobble went away again.

I read a thread somewhere where to guy had aftermarket wheels on but the wheel nuts were not big enough to make the wheel self centre, could this have happened to you?

Anyway, just a couple of ideas that won't cost you to check.

swaped the wheels front to back and checked the nuts all ok , it didnt wobble before i went off roading , i wonder if its owt to do with the free wheeling hubs clicking

I'm facing the same problem. I've changed most of the stuffs like(trailing arms, panhard rod etc)
Don't really know what's happen....

Have you changed King pin bearings? This the usual cause - exagerated by big wheels and lifted suspension. Also worth changing the swivel seals as these act as a steering damper apparently? Another cause on vehicles stood for long periods, especially on tyres at low PSI can be flat spots on the tyre. This wobble usualy goes away after the first 4/5 miles.

ps. mine still wobble violently even though Ive done the above. As I'd lost all the balance weights off the front wheels I've just fitted Dyna beads and new track rod ends on the drop arm. See how it goes.

hmmm... i'll try changing the kingpin bearing, thats one thing i didnt look at.

ive changed 1 side and its stopped it wobbling about 80% but its still there i wondering if i need to change both sides to sort it , it wasnt a bad job to do really
if im driving it fast then come to break hard while going over bumps it still does it really bad :doh:
