Oil change......
Jonny Boaterboy:
I've got a 1994 3.9 V8 if I change the oil can I let it drain out over night? I have been told you can't as you will have to re-prime the oil pump with Vaseline. Is that right for my engine? I think I might have a later gear type oil pump, allthough I'm not sure, if so can you let this drain over night?
Thanks Jonny
Range Rover Blues:
If it's a serpentine belt then you have the later HC oil pump. You can let the oil drain over a long period but leave the oil filter on.
Jonny Boaterboy:
Thanks RRB, I have got the serpentine belt so I have got a H.C. oil pump...... H.C. standing for? Why do you say leave the filter on? If it will self prime itself can you not take the drain plug out remove the filter let it drain over night, put it back together fill it up with oil and away you go?
Range Rover Blues:
I'm not too sure if the high capacity oil pump is self priming but IIRC there is an anti-drain back valve in the bottom of some filters.
However if you do it with the oil hot I don't see why you'd want to leave it more than half an hour anyway :-k
I'm sure with the engine cold and no oil pressure you'd do more damage :-.
Jonny Boaterboy:
Your right RRB no real need to drain over night.
I guess i have just been worried about it losing its prime if I take my time over the oil change but that doesn't appear to be a problem on mine. I will change the oil with a little less hast in future! Thanks
ps what does IIRC stand for I know Ill kick myself when you tell me!
